Optimize and Protect Your Bone Bank at Any Age
Osteoporosis is a highly preventable disease according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Unfortunately, it is a silent process that results in an increased rate of bone loss. This can lead to a significant increase in risk of bone fracture. This is particularly important because about 1/3 of all people over the age of 65 fall each year. There is much science has to learn about how to prevent and treat osteoporosis, however there is good literary evidence that just about anyone at any age can take steps to improve their bone health.

Bone is living tissue whose structure is affected by our physical activities, nutrition, and genetics. Consumption of calcium rich foods coupled with the right type and amount of exercise, particularly before the age of thirty, are fundamental in decreasing excessive age related losses in bone density. For postmenopausal women, a study by Kerr et al measured an increase in bone mineral density after a program of higher load, low repetition resistance exercises. For people who already have osteoporosis, it is believed that the rate of bone loss and fracture risk can be decreased by certain types of exercises and activity modification. Be careful though, because certain exercises that include forward bending of the spine can actually increase the risk of certain types of fracture in someone who has osteoporosis. An individualized balance program for fall prevention can also be an essential part of a treatment program. A physical therapist can help assess your risk and individualize an appropriate physical program for you. Feel free to contact me for more information or to schedule an appointment.
