Osteoarthritis
Have you or has someone you know been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis (OA)? OA in a nut-shell is a wear and tear phenomenon that occurs on the smooth surfaces of joints. It is interesting to know what the medical literature says about the role of exercise in the prevention and management of OA. In the highly esteemed Cochrane journal, a comprehensive literature review by Fransen et al, 2003 concluded that land-based therapeutic exercise was shown to reduce pain and improve physical function for people with OA of the knee. From a Physical Therapist’s perspective, it is important to begin by finding the amount and type of exercise you can do with as little pain as possible. This is different for every individual. It is also helpful to know that muscle strength and flexibility can be increased in a way that minimizes inappropriate wear and tear forces on the joints. If you would like help with, or would like to discuss your fitness program, Osteoarthritis or other physical limitations, please call me at 798.1408.
